It’s been six weeks (nearly the whole summer) since we started our mini-series on Chefing with Kids inspired by a meal I cooked with Kathrin’s oldest son, Finn one Friday night early in the summer. The meal was memorable – mini hamburgers, home made French fries, and a whole lot of quality time with Finn – and it is my hope that its spirit will live on with you as you get out those pots, pans, and kid-size aprons to cook with the mini-Chefs in your lives. Before wrapping up this series, we thought we’d furnish you with a cheat sheet of the recipes we like to cook with kids. Come and cook with us!
Cooking with kids is an easy, and fun way to get your kids working for you. They think it’s fun to play with their food, and you get dinner made by someone else. We live by a few simple rules when cooking with kids:
- If they like to eat it out, they’ll love to make it at home, and it’ll probably be healthier.
- If it needs to be wrapped, stacked, patted, stuffed, or rolled, it’s a kid winner.
- Repetition is key. Memories are made during Friday pizza and game nights, or Taco Tuesdays – days kids can remember, and feel secure are coming, so set a schedule.
- If it involves a machine (juicer, blender, food processor) it’s a must.
- Don’t reinvent the wheel; kids simply don’t need that much variety. You supply the standard fixings they’ll surprise with the creativity. We promise!
Here’s the cheat sheet. Use it liberally, and remember: there are no rules. Come and cook with us!
