Surf and Turf in a Soup

photo 2The jury is still out on whether a soup featuring sausage is actually a soup or, rather, a sausage delivery device. Based on my kids’ responses to this dish, it’s probably more of the latter. They have fallen in love with this soup and now plead with me to make it over and over again. Yes, I know that it contains too much sausage, even of the healthy kind, but a bowl of this soup warms you from the inside out. And with the added taste complexity, it takes you on an interesting flavor adventure that might well be worth the sausage extravagance. Come and cook with us! So, How Are We Doing So Far?

photoWe’re in our first week of the New Year and it’s already time to talk about those New Year’s resolutions. I’d be disappointed if you didn’t include at least one that has to do with healthier eating or cooking more. We know it’s sometimes hard to live by our lofty goals, but we can make a difference to our health and that of our families by applying even small changes in the food choices we make. There are plenty of opportunities to put on our plates what’s right for our health – at least three meals per day, 365 days in the year, throw in a snack or two per day and you’re up to 1,500 eats per year. Just think what a difference your choices can make! Come and cook with us! Continue reading “So, How Are We Doing So Far?”

A Little Goes a Long Way

photoBy now it’s a known fact that we at Come and Cook with Us love tomatoes. Whether in a salad, a soup or a pasta sauce, tomatoes rank high on our list! It’s their flavor, colors and nutritional value that have us coming back for more. And while it’s not always possible to have great tasting fresh tomatoes on hand, one sure way to have access to their flavor in your kitchen year-round is to stock a tube or two of sun-dried tomato paste. Its concentration adds complexity to many dishes, and if you ask my sons, they could eat it by the spoonful. Come and cook with us! Continue reading “A Little Goes a Long Way”

An Instant Classic: Pasta alla Carbonara

photoMy grandmother Omi would call it a cheap meal, but that doesn’t mean that a plate of pasta alla carbonara isn’t a big hit with my boys. The trick is to make it as light as possible and to mix in some greens, peas or zucchini, to make the dish even more nutritious. Here’s to a great dinner winner! Come and cook with us! The Art of the Tart

photoHolidays and dinner parties are clearly not the place to proselytize for healthy eating habits. But it also doesn’t mean that you have to throw out all your food convictions to please your guests. So when it comes to entertaining, even I tend to be more lenient with the butter, salt and sugar, and I try to dig a little deeper into my pile of recipes to come up with something that is delicious, whilst also being pleasing to the eye and not entirely against all the things I believe are good for you. Take the wonderful world of savory pies, tarts and galettes. Yes, they take a little more effort to prepare, but are worth every minute of your time. And once you learn to master the dough, just think of all the exciting and impressive savory and sweet dishes you and your guests will enjoy. Come and cook with us!
