My friend Arantza’s motto in life – and in the kitchen – is “back to basics”. Sometimes this way of life is a must, like when you are cooking with limited ingredients or are on a strict budget, but at other times it’s just a good reminder that when it comes to regular, every-day, nutritious food, much ado will not always result in better food. Seeing my friend’s approach to food has been an inspirational reminder that while food is sustenance, nutrition, and key to our health, it does not always have to take center-stage and take over your life. Come and cook with us! Continue reading “Let’s Keep Things Simple, Shall We?”

Or what is between us and making a good meal for our kids
Eat Early and Often!
In a recent article in the New York Times entitled “Calories Are Everywhere, Yet Hard to Track” Jane Brody addresses the question of calories we consume every day. Brody’s main point is that in the US we consume too many calories. In conversation about this, however, Jessica and I struggle with what to advise readers to do. Limit your calories? Portion control? Is that really the issue? The irony of it is, here in the United States, we may be consuming too many calories in cookies, cakes and sodas but we are not consuming enough food. So rather than limit your calories, we recommend you eat as many calories as you need through whole healthy food. In this week’s post, we champions the idea of eating early and often. Make it your goal to consume three to five whole healthy filling meals a day because chances are if you’re not eating well, your hungry body will take the calories from wherever it can. Leftovers, no more!
Nobody really likes to eat leftovers, but if you are in a bind (or your refrigerator is full of the last few days’ meal remains) they can be a great foundation to a quick meal. What’s more, when you are committed to cooking daily, the effort can sometimes present a challenge to your creativity and your patience. So, why not grant yourself a break and use those leftovers if and when you have them? Continue reading “Leftovers, no more!”
Food Rules: How to Feed your Kids
Over the past few weeks I’ve had the opportunity to hand out fresh green vegetable juices in farmers markets in NY and CA as a way to drum up interest in a documentary film on health. As I was giving away my green juice I met all sorts of people, and three types of kids: those who love green juice and drink it with abandon, those who are eager to try something new and willing to let you know if they like it (or don’t) and those who will absolutely have nothing to do with it because, frankly, “it’s green or different or…” you name it they said it. Common Problems and Solutions: I don’t know what to cook…
It happens to all of us. It’s time to make dinner, or think about dinner, or shop for dinner (once again), and you just don’t know what to make. If you’re cooking seven, or five, or even three nights a week, it can get pretty monotonous, and sometimes that monotony freezes your creativity. Here’s how each of us deals with the monotony of having to cook, often, as well as how some of our friends tackle it as well. We hope these ideas will help inspire you to keep up the good fight, and cook fresh food as often as you can! Continue reading “Common Problems and Solutions: I don’t know what to cook…”
