There might be better ways than hiking to celebrate a major milestone birthday (I’m not telling which one), but this year my friend Helen and I decided that attempting to climb Mt. Whitney would be the right way to celebrate this event (with our devoted husbands cheering us on, and climbing as well). So, last Sunday night, in freezing weather, thunderstorms and snow, we set out to climb Mt. Whitney, the highest mountain of the contiguous United States. We didn’t make it to the top (the weather was NOT permitting), but we had a great time anyway. Breathtaking views, raging snow-storms, and a nice bottle of French red wine to celebrate all helped to make this a birthday to remember, but what capped the experience was finding the perfect grilled cheese sandwich waiting for us in Lone Pine. That sandwich, and everything it represents, helped us feel welcomed by civilization again. In honor of my wonderful birthday hiking meal, this week’s post is dedicated to the perfect grilled cheese sandwich. Continue reading “The Joy of the Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich”

Meatball Mania
This past Saturday night I was at a loss for what to cook. We’d been out to dinner a few times so eating out really wasn’t an option, and I was hungry, so a simple salad dinner just wasn’t going to cut it. I was tired from a busy week, and not very motivated to cook creatively, if at all. If it was going to happen, it needed to be quick and easy. Continue reading “Meatball Mania”
Hot, Hot, Hot!
Here in Northern California the weather has been warm. Very warm. So warm, in fact, that when it’s time to cook dinner I want to stick my head in the freezer and not come out. But, there’s only so much freezer living you can do before it’s time to eat, so we thought we would dedicate this week’s post to cooking when it’s hot. Continue reading “Hot, Hot, Hot!”
If it’s Tuesday, it must be Tacos
Several months ago my six-year old came home and announced that he wanted to make Tuesday “Taco Tuesdays”; maybe he’d heard about it at school, or perhaps my son has taken to reading Laurie David’s “The Family Dinner”, I’m not sure. Nevertheless, because his request was healthy (and easy), we agreed to give it a try. Since then, we’ve stuck to our Taco Tuesdays religiously – well, almost. Common Problems and Solutions: I don’t know what to cook…
It happens to all of us. It’s time to make dinner, or think about dinner, or shop for dinner (once again), and you just don’t know what to make. If you’re cooking seven, or five, or even three nights a week, it can get pretty monotonous, and sometimes that monotony freezes your creativity. Here’s how each of us deals with the monotony of having to cook, often, as well as how some of our friends tackle it as well. We hope these ideas will help inspire you to keep up the good fight, and cook fresh food as often as you can! Continue reading “Common Problems and Solutions: I don’t know what to cook…”
