A Little Goes a Long Way

photoBy now it’s a known fact that we at Come and Cook with Us love tomatoes. Whether in a salad, a soup or a pasta sauce, tomatoes rank high on our list! It’s their flavor, colors and nutritional value that have us coming back for more. And while it’s not always possible to have great tasting fresh tomatoes on hand, one sure way to have access to their flavor in your kitchen year-round is to stock a tube or two of sun-dried tomato paste. Its concentration adds complexity to many dishes, and if you ask my sons, they could eat it by the spoonful. Come and cook with us! Continue reading “A Little Goes a Long Way”

A Strudel a Day…

photoIn our house it’s often strudel time. My mother, my sister and even my nephew have always been very proficient in strudel making, an art that is well established in my home region, South Tyrol. With the apple season upon us, a few constantly hungry boys in the house and my strong conviction that strudel-making should be part of my skill-set, I thought it was time to dive into this very traditional dish and tell you more about apple strudels. What’s That You’re Holding There: Lemongrass?

7a8a61a4dd4711e293c522000a9f4d92_7Jessica and I go way back. She was an intern on her way to the West Coast to finish her MBA, and I had just moved from Europe to work in NYC. We discovered our shared fondness for food – and each other – and had many discussions reviewing new restaurants, speciality food stores and weekend farmers markets. So it comes to no surprise that today, over a decade later, our work, life and passion still revolves around food. Having a friend like Jessica means that you don’t even bat an eye when she shows up to a coffee meeting with a plump purple kohlrabi and a fresh stalk of what?  Lemongrass! Well, the kohlrabi was easy to deal with, but what to do with the lemongrass? Read on to find out. Come and cook with us! Continue reading “What’s That You’re Holding There: Lemongrass?”

A Spanish Feast

c5de3432c1c211e2a2e222000a9e48a3_7We talk a lot about food but when it comes to sitting down for dinner, or breakfast or lunch, for that matter, it is often more about the company you share it with than the dish you eat. In the best of cases, both food and company are outstanding which is how we concluded this past weekend. After two hard days of camping in Mt. Tamalpais State Park, we returned home last Sunday afternoon pretty beaten up. How great it was when my dear friend Arantza’s mother and younger brother came over for dinner. And lucky for us all, they brought plenty of delicious Spanish food and also prepared it for us to eat while we shared stories of our weekend adventures. Come and cook with us! The Chefs Have Left the Building (and Headed Off to School)

It’s been six weeks (nearly the whole summer) since we started our mini-series on Chefing with Kids inspired by a meal I cooked with Kathrin’s oldest son, Finn one Friday night early in the summer.  The meal was memorable – mini hamburgers, home made French fries, and a whole lot of quality time with Finn – and it is my hope that its spirit will live on with you as you get out those pots, pans, and kid-size aprons to cook with the mini-Chefs in your lives.  Before wrapping up this series, we thought we’d furnish you with a cheat sheet of the recipes we like to cook with kids.  Come and cook with us!
