Have you heard of dukkha? To be honest, I can’t say that I’ve known about it for long. It’s a savory blend of roasted nuts, seeds and spices that hails all the way from Egypt. The fragrant mix is absolutely delicious, very versatile and super easy to make. Where have I been that I didn’t know about it sooner? Here’s to more dukkah in my house and, hopefully, yours, too. Come and cook with us! Continue reading “Nuts and Seed Aren’t Just For Birds: Make Dukkah!”

Stoked for Chocolate (with Recipe)
What better occasion to talk about chocolate than this week! After all, it’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow and while I don’t eat chocolate on a daily basis, I make exceptions. And this week is one of them. After all, chocolate in itself is not bad for you. At least not when you buy the right kind and eat it in moderation. Which is why I ventured into making my very own Valentine’s treat! Come and cook with us! Continue reading “Stoked for Chocolate (with Recipe)”
What’s New on the Menu?
One of the reasons I love my mom’s cooking is that she is the queen of mixing things up. Never will you see the same dish twice within a short period of time. In fact, I never hear even the slightest hint of indecision when it comes to picking her next meal. She just knows, always changing things up, cooking with the seasons and making the most of what she has around. It’s a skill and while I try to use my full repertoire of cook books, I sure could use a little help in keeping the menu new and interesting. Which is why I love the pile of recipe ideas on my desk. These words on paper scream out to me. They want a chance to turn into successful and well-liked dishes so that they can move from anonymity to prominence in my beloved recipe box. This is how I keep things interesting for the boys who are the ultimate hungry guinea-pigs, and luckily very rewarding in their role. Today I’d like to share a few of my latest discoveries which are taking up permanent residency in our menu of ideas. Hope you take them into consideration as well. Come and cook with us! Turn your Pantry into Raw Energy
As most of you know, I am an improviser in the kitchen. This makes it harder to follow a recipe to the “t”, but it helps me be inventive with what I have in my fridge, freezer or pantry. With a little inspiration from the newest cookies and health bars hitting the shelves in stores, I experimented with the nuts and seeds in my kitchen and came up with my very own raw, no-bake, chocolate, nut and seed balls. OK, the name sounds complicated but, luckily, they are everything but! Come and cook with us! Continue reading “Turn your Pantry into Raw Energy”
Kathrin’s Nut Cake: the Perfect Holiday Treat
It’s nearing the end of 2011 but there’s still a few more days of holiday cheer coming our way. With all the cocktail parties, lunches, dinners and get togethers of the season, we find it hard to be creative when thinking of what to make when ringing in the New Year. So, in order to make this Eve bright (and easy) I asked Kathrin to share with me the recipe for her famous (famous in my book, anyway) gluten free nut cake. It is the dessert I request most when Kathrin is cooking for me. And, because it’s not a regular in the repertoire of American cooking it never ceases to surprise and delight. I’ve included Kathrin’s recipe here. Try it and see if it isn’t just the perfect treat for your New Year’s entertaining. Have a happy, merry holiday season. Come and cook with us!
