Care for a Side of Pesticides?
A study called: “Are Organic Foods Safer or Healthier Than Conventional Alternatives?” has been published yesterday in the Annals of Internal Medicine and has come to the somewhat surprising conclusion that “published literature lacks strong evidence that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods.” However, it has also concluded that “consumption of organic foods may reduce exposure to pesticide residues and antibiotic-resistant bacteria”. What is a Microbiome and Why Should I Care?
If you are a regular reader of our blog (and we hope you are) you know that we write not only about the fruits and vegetables in season right now, but also about healthy-living-through-food-related topics such as the benefits of water, and when to choose organic. Recently, I’ve been attending classes with one of my favorite chef-authors, Meredith McCarty, and learning a lot about the role bacteria plays in keeping us healthy. So I was excited to read about the results of a study that is mapping the genetic material of bacteria in healthy people, and changing the research landscape in this field.
