Whenever Doug, my husband, returns from a trip, I like to welcome him back with a dish I know he likes. He usually wants “something with lots of vegetables”, probably to make up for the steaks and burgers he has on the road. One of his absolute favorites is melanzane alla parmigiana, a typical Italian dish featuring eggplant. Come and cook with us! Continue reading “Mighty Melanzane”

The Flotte Lotte and What She has to Do with Canning!
It’s best to say YES when Jessica proposes a culinary project. It’s what I did when she said that we should be canning tomatoes. A look at our calendars, a call to Riverdog Farm, a visit to the store to stock up on canning supplies and we were ready to process five large boxes of 2013 Early Girl tomatoes. Come and can with us! What’s for Dinner? Well, let’s check the fridge and see what we find…
All right, I admit it: I’m ready for summer. I don’t know if it’s the long days, the higher temperatures or just the one too many commitments I’m trying to squeeze in before the school year ends, but I am past ready for it. One side effect of this is that I’ve lost my enthusiasm to go grocery shopping, which has been quite a challenge when it comes to fixing dinner. It has also forced me to refine my “kitchen foraging” skills: what can I make with what little I have in the kitchen? Well, let’s check the fridge and see what we find…”
A Spanish Feast
We talk a lot about food but when it comes to sitting down for dinner, or breakfast or lunch, for that matter, it is often more about the company you share it with than the dish you eat. In the best of cases, both food and company are outstanding which is how we concluded this past weekend. After two hard days of camping in Mt. Tamalpais State Park, we returned home last Sunday afternoon pretty beaten up. How great it was when my dear friend Arantza’s mother and younger brother came over for dinner. And lucky for us all, they brought plenty of delicious Spanish food and also prepared it for us to eat while we shared stories of our weekend adventures. Come and cook with us! Pappa al Pomodoro
It’s common sense. Children learn by imitation. And because of this they eat what we eat (or what they see people around them eating or avoiding). With that in mind, let me tell you about my oldest son’s most favorite dish: Pappa al Pomodoro. It is a dish he watched his father eat every Saturday at the little Italian restaurant in our neighborhood, and it is one that has become near and dear to his heart. If it were up to him we’d be eating the Pappa (a.k.a. tomato soup) for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Thankfully the rest of the family is happy to go along with his wishes. But it wasn’t always the case… Continue reading “Pappa al Pomodoro”
