Why We Cook.

Kathrin and I sat down to discuss why we are dedicated to publishing this blog weekly and we realized that for us cooking is a culture, a ritual, and a process that we wouldn’t (couldn’t, shouldn’t) live without.  We started to wonder why that is, why we cook.  So, this week’s post explores some of the reasons we came up with for taking out those pots and pans daily.  We hope you agree, and if you are in need of inspiration you can find it here.  Let us know why you cook; we’d love to hear from you.  Come and cook with us!

We cook because…

  1. That’s what people have done for generations, cooked their food at home.
  2. The body requires nourishment as close to it’s natural state as possible, therefore, in order to take care of ourselves and give our bodies (and our family) what it needs, we must cook.
  3. We are responsible for our own health, not the organic, healthy food company featured in the store, not the farm to table restaurant that opened down the block, and certainly not the industrial food service company creating TV dinners.
  4. The food we cook tastes better, and is fresher than the food we can purchase at a store or restaurant or in a box.
  5. My mother did cook.
  6. Our children learn by imitation; what better way to develop good eaters and a culture of food then to cook at home.
  7. My mother didn’t cook.
  8. Cooking daily creates a ritual within a family.
  9. We want our children to know what real food tastes like; the palate is developed by what it is exposed to!
  10. It’s expensive if we don’t.  In the short term it may not seem this way, but over time the benefits of simple, fresh cooked meals far outweigh the potential health risks of eating processed or prepared foods.
